FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. How often should I visit the dentist?  What if I’m afraid of the dentist?
Most patients should visit every six months for a cleaning and exam, though some patients with gum disease or other conditions may need more frequent visits. Dental anxiety is very common - you are not alone! Our team focuses on gentle care, clear communication, and patient comfort.

2. How often should I brush and floss my teeth? Should I brush before or after flossing?
Brush and floss twice a day, in the morning and at night. Ideally floss first, then brush second. Using a mouthwash afterward can provide extra protection. Proper technique helps prevent cavities and gum disease

3. Why do my gums bleed when I floss? How to stop bleeding gums?
Bleeding gums are usually a sign of inflammation from plaque buildup (this is gingivitis) or improper flossing technique (this is trauma). Consistent brushing and flossing often improves gingivitis within a week or two. If you notice your gums bleeding when flossing - make sure you're flossing gently and correctly, then floss every day for a week and you will likely see significant improvement.

4. What happens during a dental cleaning? What if you don’t get your teeth cleaned?
A dental cleaning removes calcified tartar and plaque buildup that brushing and flossing can't. Your teeth are also polished and flossed for a smooth finish. Skipping cleanings increases risk of gum disease, bone loss, and tooth loss.

5. What causes bad breath and how can I fix it?
Most bad breath comes from bacteria on the tongue or in the back of the mouth. Other causes include gum disease, dry mouth, or poor oral hygiene. Rarely, bad breath can be caused by digestive issues like acid reflux or GERD; as well as other health problems. If you're worried about bad breath - schedule an appointment with your dentist to evaluate the cause.

6. What should I do if I have a toothache or pain when biting down?
Contact our office as soon as possible. Tooth pain is often a sign of infection, cracks, decay, or inflammation, and early treatment prevents bigger problems.

7. Are chipped or cracked teeth a dental emergency?
Not always urgent, but it should be evaluated quickly to prevent further damage. Sometimes small chips can be smoothed or left alone, while large cracks can grow and cause pain.

8. What should I do if a tooth gets knocked out (avulsed)?
Place the tooth in milk or saliva and call our office immediately. Teeth sometimes can be saved if treated quickly.

9. Do dental cleanings hurt?
Most cleanings at our office are comfortable. If you have sensitive teeth or inflamed gums, we take steps to make the visit as comfortable as possible. Skeptical? See patient reviews for firsthand experiences.

10. Why do I need X-rays? Are they safe?
Dental X-rays are the standard of care. They help detect cavities, bone loss, infections, and hidden problems that can’t be seen during an exam. Modern digital X-rays use very low radiation - 90% less than film X-rays - and less than 1/10th of the radiation from one hour of an airplane flight.

11. What is fluoride and why do dentists recommend it?
Fluoride is helpful when applied to the surface of the teeth - it strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities/decay. Bacteria in your mouth produce acid that breaks down teeth (this is how you get cavities) - fluoride makes your teeth better withstand this bacterial acid.

12. What are my options for whitening my teeth? How can I whiten my teeth safely?
Professional whitening options include in-office whitening and custom take-home trays, both of which are more effective than over-the-counter products. We do not recommend abrasive toothpastes or charcoal which remove the outer layer of enamel.

13. What are veneers? How long do they last?
Veneers are thin ceramic shells placed on the front of teeth to improve shape, color, and alignment. Veneers are permanent, and with proper care can last many years. Check out examples of veneer cases on our Instagram.

14. What is a crown? When do I need a crown instead of a filling?
Crowns are strong ceramic caps that cover and protect the tooth underneath. Crowns are recommended when a tooth is too damaged or weakened for a filling to properly restore strength.

15. How much does a crown cost in Orange County? What affects the cost?
Dental crowns typically range from $1500-$2000 depending on materials and case complexity. We do all-ceramic zirconia crowns, and they are custom-made by a local dental laboratory.

16. What is a root canal? Can a tooth infection heal on its own?
A root canal removes infected tissue inside a tooth to relieve pain and save the tooth. Without removing the source of the infection - a tooth infection will not heal on its own (even with continued antibiotic use).

17. What happens during my first visit?
Your first visit typically includes a comprehensive exam, digital X-rays, an intraoral scan, and a professional cleaning. We’ll review your dental health, discuss any concerns, and create a personalized treatment plan if needed.

18. What are the signs of gum disease? Can gum disease be reversed?
Gum disease (also called periodontal disease, or periodontitis) is caused by chronic inflammation of the gums and is defined by loss of attachment around the tooth. Common signs of gum disease include:

     - Puffy, red, swollen gums that bleed easily

     - Bad breath

     - Loose teeth

     - You may be told by your dentist or hygienist that you have deep gum pockets.

Loss of bone and soft-tissue attachment due to gum disease is irreversible, but with proper care and treatment it can be halted and maintained.

19. How long do dental procedures take? What is the typical downtime after an appointment?
Typical appointment times by procedure:

     - New patient visit: 1-1.5 hours, no downtime

     - Routine cleaning and exam: 1 hour or less, no downtime

     - Filling: 0.5-2 hours, minimal or no downtime

     - Crown and Veneer: 1-2 hours for preparation, 0.5-1 hour for delivery appointment, minimal downtime

20. Can crooked teeth be fixed without braces?

Yes! Clear aligners like Invisalign can fix crooked teeth without the need of brackets or wires. Also, in some minor cases we can also use veneers or other restorations to make teeth appear straight. We have examples of both on our office Instagram.
